Public Meeting in Support of Bahais of Iran - June 8 2009
Some 300,000 Baha’is live throughout Iran, making the Baha’i Faith the country’s largest minority religion. Baha’is have been targets of discrimination and violence in Iran since the religion began there in the mid-nineteenth century. In 2008 Iranian authorities arrested seven Baha'i leaders who have now been imprisoned for over one year without access to legal counsel. Soon, they are headed to trial. No evidence has been made public. Punishment, if the seven are found guilty, could be death.
The LV Baha'is and other concened citizens gathered on June 8 2009 at the Bethlehem's Serenity Peace Garden in an effort to raise public awareness and to encourage our U.S. Senators to co-sponsor and support S. Res 71 which condemns the government of Iran for its state-sponsored persecution of its Baha'i minority and its continued violation of the International Covenants on Human Rights.
